How it Works

A pound of newspapers may fetch a penny or so on the materials market, but over time, those pennies add up. That's the idea behind Resource Center's CHA Recycle Buy-Back program, which gives back to CHA residents the proceeds from the sale of the materials to the recycling facilities.

Recycling & Social Justice

Recycling shouldn't be a luxury for only a few. The most direct goal of the program is make recycling services accessible to CHA residents. The financial incentive is to encourage them to use the services and to recycle more, and many CHA tenants earn additional income through this program. Our goal is to make it as convenient and easy as possible to participate in this program.

Our mobile collections vehicle visits all areas served by the program, allowing residents easy access to our buy-back "drop-off location." Recycling education is also provided to residents to further promote the social and environmental benefits of recycling.

The CHA Buy-Back Recycling program currently serves all senior and family units of public housing in the City of Chicago.

More Social Benefits

Hiring locally, the Resource Center's programs support local economic and environmental revitalization. CHA residents are hired when possible to work on collection routes and in our sorting facilities-adding the benefit of job training and job readiness skills adaptable for other work settings.
